Welcome to Area51
This little website is dedicated to the game Deus Ex and its UnrealEd SDK. Although most of lgclassics.net is about System Shock 2, Deus Ex, released in 2000, pushed even farther the interactivity seen in Irrational's '99 masterpiece, and as such is considered by many as Shock 2''s spiritual brother. Imagined by Warren Spector (the man behind the original Shock) and his Ion Storm team, it featured fully customizable character/skill development, open gameplay (several possible endings), optional mission objectives, and huge levels that took literally hours to explore. On top of that, a complex plot drove the player from New York to Paris via Hong Kong, explained through both world and NPC interaction, another step towards what is now generally referred to as "emergent gameplay". I think it's pretty safe to say that basically, both Shock 2 and the original Deus Ex inspired the mix of FPS/RPG features in games. Deus Ex's sequel, Invisible War, was released in 2004. |
